Can We Stop Scaring Moms with Movies?!

Dear Movie Directors,

The way you depict labor fucking sucks. I said it. You need to do better because it’s pretty obvious you fear birth and you are forcing that fear on mothers everywhere that are watching your movies.

You depict it with the mom screaming at her partner with sweat on her face saying “I hate you for doing this to me!”

But why?! Have you really never seen a birth where the partner is holding the mom with love saying, “You can do this. I love you.” and then the mom saying “I’ve got this. I love you”

I promise, it is a thing.

Also, let’s talk about how you portray the waters breaking…

Do you know how many first time moms I talk to that are surprised that their water probably isn’t going to pop and gush everywhere in the middle of the grocery store and then they are going to have intense, horrible, thinking-their-life-is-ending contractions?

That does not happen often enough for you to portray it in every fucking movie. And if the waters does break before labor, contractions don’t necessarily start right away. It usually takes a while for labor to pick up.

Please, for the love of god start portraying more supported physiological births. And while we are at it, stop portraying doulas as crystal carrying hippies that yell at the spouses to get out while they love on the laborer. I mean, I totally love crystals and I’m kinda hippie, but no way in hell am I there to take the spouses place.
