A Beautiful January Birth- A Colorado Springs Home Birth

I met Nicki in December when she was looking for a birth doula. As a first time mom, she knew the importance of having that support and I was so happy to give it. We met December 14th for some smoothies and chatted about her wishes for her birth. Since she hired me at 35 weeks we scheduled her prenatal appointments for right away. We did all 3 within 3 weeks to make sure we got them all in before baby came. January 13th, around 3am, she texted saying she had been having contractions for a few hours and it might be baby time, but they had gone away by noon. Contractions started up again on the 14th though. January 19th she went to try to work the baby out at the gym and at around 7:30 pm she said she might actually be in labor. She had some bloody show and some contractions. By 8:30 pm the contractions had picked up and she really thought it was real. I got my daughter dropped off and went home to sleep, but right as I laid down, she said she needed me (9:10pm). I got to her house right before 10pm and she was laboring hard. First time moms usually don’t have super quick labors, but she was showing some signs of transition. I was hesitant of calling the midwife but when she said she was feeling pressure I called the midwife right away to let her know what was going on. “So we’re going to have the fastest primip labor ever?” the midwife joked. And I almost didn’t believe myself when I said, “uh yeah. pretty sure we might.” The midwife arrived about 30 minutes later and I think she believed me a little more when she saw mom. Nicki got into the birth pool about 10 minutes after the midwife arrived (11:30). The water provided a nice comfort for her to relax a little easier through the contractions. About 30 minutes after getting into the water, Nicki felt the urge to push. She pushed for about 3 hours and her sweet baby entered the world at 3.01 am on January 20th. She weighed 8lbs 9oz.
